As markets continue to surge in India, steady inflows into mutual funds have taken the industry AUM (Assets Under Management) to an all- time high of Rs 19.26 Lakh Crores at the end of April 2017 ( Source : AMFI).A buoyant investor sentiment, increased retail conviction and hence, participation in mutual funds and a noticeable growth in Systematic Investment Plans (“SIPs”)could have all attributed to this growth.

Investment Basics

Rolling returns

Before investing in mutual funds investors generallyconsider CAGR as one of the parameters for fund selection. Compounded Annualized return or CAGR tracks the year on year growth of the investments over a specific period of time. To have a clear picture, let’s take an example. Suppose a fund was started in January 1, 2011, with an NAV of Rs 10. By December 31, 2016, its NAV had increased to Rs 20. The CAGR return of the fund over the five-year period comes to 14.86%, which seems pretty good.
